              Description

The XD-5 is a completely redesigned helmet, packed with many new features. As with everything from Arai, every improvement is made with a priority for protection. And this new model brings us ever closer to the ideal Arai shape for protection.

One of the biggest changes is the visor system and its visor. The new VAS-A visor system, derived from the VAS-V system originally developed for the Corsair-X, has been designed to maximize Glancing-Off performance, meaning more surface area to glance off impact energy whilst offering easy installation and removal of the visor and peak. The visor itself has been redesigned for increased visibility and Glancing-Off performance, and is now a Max Vision visor, so a Pinlock insert can easily be installed. The new VAS-A visor system also makes it easier to switch, without tools, to one of the other styles. You can choose between Adventure, Off-road and On-road.

              XD-5 Peak

The all-new peak is designed for more effective ventilation, increased high speed flow-through performance, greater range of adjustability for blocking the sun, and is more resistant to buffeting, all of which leads to an overall more comfortable riding experience.

              Three Distinct Configurations

The XD-5 offers three distinct configurations depending on rider preference or riding conditions. Change the look every time you ride, or even during the same ride.

The XD-5 has the option to use just the shield for street use, just the peak (with a set of your favorite goggles) for off-road use, and the shield and peak combined to create a truly multi-functional ADV helmet.

All-New Shell and VAS-A Shield System

The new VAS-A Max Vision system allows for easier and faster shield swaps. The shield can be attached or removed without the need for any tools. The peak utilizes only one screw on each side for removal/installation.

The amount of energy that any helmet can absorb is limited and Arai believes in a crash the only option is to have the helmet glance in a way that directs the impact energy away from the inside of the helmet. The shell of the XD-5 is designed to be round, smooth, and strong so that it can more easily 'glance off' impact energy in an actual crash.

              Chin Vent

The opening area for the XD-5 mouth-shutter is double the size compared to the XD-4. Thanks to the evolution in shell strength from the previous generation, the aperture could be made larger, and the mouth shutter could be made to flow more fresh air without the need for the mesh vents as seen on its predecessors.

              Inner Shutter

Working in conjunction with the mouth shutter, the inner shutter allows you to adjust the amount of airflow entering the helmet. If the inner and outer shutters are both open, the air will be directed towards your mouth. If the outer shutter is open and the inner closed, the air will be directed towards the shield and help to reduce fogging.

              Front Logo Vent

The effectiveness of conventional forehead vents could be limited by the rider's position, but with the front logo duct, airflow is unaffected by changes in riding position. Thanks to advances in shell technology, Arai has added holes in the forehead area for this vent without compromising the helmet's ability to protect.

              AR Spoiler

Set in a position that makes it ideal for adventure riding, the AR spoiler contributes to reducing fatigue from turbulent air throughout long rides and works to draw out hot air from the crown area.

              VAS-A Max Vision Shield Pin-Lock

The new max-vision shield preserves the wide field-of-view and high level of visibility expected of an XD model. The Pinlock insert for this model has advanced to be effective at resisting fogging, even in extreme conditions, across the entire field of view (Pinlock insert is included and use is optional).

              Odor-Resistant Interior

The XD-5 utilizes an interior liner that has the same level of acidity as bare skin and has odor-resistant and stain-resistant properties. The headliner is equipped with a removable foam layer on both the left and right sides for temples and a removable foam layer in the rear of the head-liner, allowing you to remove 5mm of foam if desired for exceptional micro-fitting adjustability (Once micro-fit pads are removed they cannot be replaced).

              Air Flap

The retractable pull-down spoiler reduces wind intrusion into the bottom of the helmet and helps to pull out hot and humid exhaled air around the sculpted leading edges of the cheek pads. This coordinated ventilation, combined with fresh intake from the chin vent, also helps to reduce shield fogging.

              Interior Shape:

Intermediate Oval (IO) - This shape is designed for the rider whose head has a front-to-back dimension that is longer than the side-to-side dimension. This is a neutral head-shape design which tends to fit most riders well.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Build quality, comfort and attention to detail Great build quality and the most comfortable helmet that I own. I wore the helmet around the house to gauge fit, and it seemed good, but there is nothing like a ride to be sure. I just returned from a 3 hour ride (yes, even in February on the West Coast...), and the choice of size and comfort were proven. For sizing, my head circumference measures 58.5cm, which technically puts me between M and L sizes. Others have commented that sizing runs a bit on the small side, and I would have to agree. The L size is perfect in my case. M would have been too small. I also found that the ventilation (which can't be tested sitting on the couch) was amazing, with great adjustability as evening approached and the air got colder. For me, fogging is a problem with cold outside air, but the XD-5 vents that direct air to keep the visor clear were very effective. I had been worried about the 'peak' and whether it would cause buffeting. I need not have been concerned: the helmet felt very smooth at reasonable highway speeds (90-120km on a DR650 with a small windscreen). The benefits of the peak were significant. In parts of the highway where - at certain times of day and with other helmets - I have had to tilt my head down unnaturally and squint to shield my eyes from being blinded by low angle sun, the peak worked wonderfully. I like the attention to detail in the black underside of the peak, to minimize reflection and stray light. Finally, the wide field of view gives an extra measure of safety in heavy traffic because of improved peripheral vision, and when on the open road (and traffic isn't an issue) the wide field of view makes the ride sooo enjoyable.

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Fit Small I bought a Large, but it was too small. Then I ordered an XL, but it was too loose. I fit a Large Bell MX-9 perfectly, so I guess it just doesn’t match my head shape. I returned them both. You can definitely tell the quality is there, but honestly, I’m not sure it’s much better than the MX-9 (2025) that I ended up buying.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Yes, a bit dated but overall very pleased with it. Purchased an adventure motorcycle, sold the sport touring bike, and with this I was looking for a different helmet. While the XD5 didn't score well in some reviews, and the age on the design is getting up there, I find this to be a substantial upgrade in terms of visibility and comfort over my old Shoei RF1200. Bonus items, it matches the color of my new ride and it was on sale via Fortnine. While only having had it on a few short rides at the end of the season, I'm very please with it. Sizing is similar to the RF, one notch above in terms of comfort and a MASSIVE upgrade in viewing window.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from True 3 in 1 Worth the price for the comfort alone. Quality is very high. Flexibility is amazing with all the vents and options.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Best Helmet I've Owned Works as a street helmet for riding to the back woods trails. Rode with it for 1500 kms that included 100km/hr highways, paved backroads, dirt roads, bush trails and logging roads. The venting is impressive and the included Pin Lock shield is great for eliminating fogging in wet weather riding. Super comfortable with no pressure points.

              Questions

Is the new Aria xd5 helmet designed to be worn with eye glasses?

              Asked by: THarding
The compatibility would vary based on the size of your glasses. While not specifically designed for them, it should comfortably accommodate glasses with the shield. You can watch a review video where a rider wears glasses with the shield without any issues. https://youtu.be/uHVuKmgfNN8?t=948
