Avon TrekRider - Excellent tourer and gravel
Used a set for my cross-Canada journey and I have to say - I like these tires, a lot! They are excellent.
Almost exactly 15,000 kilometers of riding on them before the rear was completely warn out. The front actually still has some life left.
I'd highly recommend the Trekriders to anyone looking for a good 50/50 tire.
Here are some observations:
On pavement it felt as good as the Pilot Road 4 Trails I had on my Varadero - which says a lot - they're that good.
I pushed them on twisty roads, rode in wet and rain on several occasions - excellent in all conditions.
Offroad they are steady and predictable and bite into surface well. I'd say about 10% of my time on these tires was in gravel and dirt road use. Worked well in packed dirt, loose gravel and even oatmeal type muck. The only place they didn't work well was loose sandy surfaces, but I'd guess that only a true knobby would work there.
It's a single compound tire and wears evenly through its life. The tires remained easy to turn in and cornered the same throughout their use right to the end.
I had a front flat (twice) on my journey and it was easy to remove the tire with simple hand tools.
At 15,000 kilometres they go on, and on, and on. If you use them primarily for dirt and gravel I'd say at about 12,000 kilometres they would stop being useful. On the pavement they were fine all the way.
If you're looking for a long-life and multi-purpose tire this is an excellent one.

Great tires but here's a few things...
Avon TrekRiders
Finally finished both off so I can now add a comment that will hopefully be useful.
Rear tire lasted 10,862 kms
Front tire lasted 17,280 kms.
(see photos)
I ride a VStrom 650XA usually loaded for long tours on rougher back roads, avoiding highways. 470 pounds wet plus 220 pounds of me, camping gear, luggage and added weight like skid plate, engine guards.
They started life at the 2019 FAR pounding along on gravel, rocks and dirt roads for three days. I was most impressed on loose gravel. A road was made open to us that was still under construction that was about 10” deep of the 2” stone used in new road creation. A first for me (the FAR was my first off-road riding experience), and of course the bike squirmed around as I rode through that material, but with steady traction. The knobby dirt bike guys I was with were impressed and said, ”…’must have some good tires on that…”.
TrekRiders were always great on pavement dry or wet, and never lost any confidence with them, loaded for travel or cases off for a days noodle around back roads or a power line path. I like to lean and carve but not at high speeds because becoming ‘part of the landscape’ is not my goal… and they always felt stuck to the asphalt.
Front tire noise… I’m not sure when the whine began, but for about the last 8,000 kms the front tire started an annoying whining sound when at about 90 kms.
The surface they were not great on was sand. I don’t think any tire profile other than blocks or knobbies will do well there - the give and take of any tire.
Good tires, but now have a set of Avon TrailRiders (80/20), as they suit my riding for general punishment really well, and are very quiet on road and very capable on gravel, etc. I’ll mount block pattern tires (Shinko 805/05) for the FARR '22 this September.
I’ve always had good experiences with Avon tires. My last bike was a Concours1000 sport-tourer with RoadDemon then a 3DXM set -the Avons were so good it felt like a better motorcycle, and RoadRiders on a TU250X Cafe bike conversion I did, that transformed the bike perfectly. Avon is good rubber!

Questions
Are these radials or bias in the 150/70-17 configuration? Are they a quiet road tire or loud when compared to the Heidenau K60scout?
The tires are bias ply. If a tire is radial, it will have a "R" before the rim size. Based on customer reviews, this tire is quieter than the Heidenau K60 scout. Whilst both tires are rated as a 50/50, the Avon is probably closer to a 60/40, and the Heidenau has a more open deeper tread

Are these tires designed to run with tubes, or without? (F650GS owner, so looking for tube supported tires.)
I have installed these on my KLR 650 with tubes without any issues.

In the details it’s mentioned “radial and cross-ply”. I’m new to these types of tires. Does that mean it’s a radial tire? Or bias? Thank you.
i think that radials are more flat hard tire while the cross-ply is more offroad rap
