How to Clean a Motorcycle Chain

Location, Location, Location

Cleaning a chain can be done in just a couple of minutes. But you need a suitable location, such as a garage or a piece of flat, level ground. Cleaning can be a little messy, so it’s a good idea to put something down beneath the bike—an old piece of plywood, a tarp or some cardboard will work well.

Tirox is a great chain cleaner if you're concerned about clean-up. Unlike some cleaners, Tirox encourages you to rinse the chain after cleaning to help get rid of the grime. This helps you wash down your garage or driveway while you're at it. As an extra bonus, Tirox is made right here in Canada. Cool, eh?

Tools of the Trade

Once you have a location, you need to get the tools ready. You’ll need a pair of automotive gloves, chain cleaner, shop towels or some clean, dry rags; and a piece of  cardboard or newspaper around 30 square centimeters.

Now that you’re ready to clean, it’s as easy as 1, 2, 3. Literally.

Step 1: Take the bike for a quick ride to warm up the chain—everything works better on a warm chain.

Step 2: Place the bike on its centre stand or on a race stand, and insert the piece of cardboard or newspaper between the chain and rear tire. This will catch any overspray,

Step 3: Rotate the rear wheel and - at the same time - spray the cleaner onto the chain. Aim close to where the lower run of the chain and the rear sprocket meet. Ideally, rotate the wheel so the chain is running AWAY from the rear sprocket. This will ensure you don’t get your fingers pinched.

Spray liberally and make sure you cover all of the chain. Some cleaners must be left to work their magic for a few minutes, while others may require rinsing. Either way, you may want to run some shop towels or a clean, dry cloth over the chain to help dry it off and get rid of the last of the gunk.

And that’s it! Now you’re ready to lube .
