The Medium and Long versions (not the short version) include a single spring inside the arm opens the end sockets, allowing you to pivot the ball and socket connection.

Amazing Versatility and Strength
I have at least 8 of these arms at various lengths to support phone, extra mirrors, i-pad, writing tablet, water bottle holder, etc., etc. The arms and RAM mounts are very strong, do not rust, hold fast against any vibrations or wind drag, and can be adjusted at various angles to suit your purpose.
