PRODUCT DETAILS AND UV PROTECTION
Transitions® adaptive sunwear products have a range of light transmission levels, all optimized for the specific activity the product is designed for. Specifically, the SHOEI® Transitions® adaptive shield:
- Non-activated - virtually clear
- Activated - darken to a 15% light transmission level at 72 Fahrenheit and 23 Celsius
- Full activation in two minutes
- Fades to 50% transmission in two minutes
- Like all Transitions® products, the visor blocks 100% of UV rays

TEMPERATURE
SHOEI® Transitions® adaptive shields are designed to meet International Standards of Performance for driving. Like all photochromic products, temperature can cause fluctuation in performance. UV rays activate the photochromic molecules through a photochemical process - this makes the shield darken. The fade back reaction is actually driven by heat - so in extremely hot temperatures, the photochromic molecules are actually fading back while they are activating - this prevents the shield from fully darkening. Transitions® lens technology is the most advanced in the industry, and is the least temperature sensitive, but there will be some performance variables depending on the temperature.

Definitely Worth Every Penny!
Having now had the opportunity to test out the Shoei CWR1 Transitions Photochromic shield in a variety of riding conditions including cooler temps, overcast skies, bright sun, and riding west directly into the setting glare before dusk, I have to say that I give this shield a solid 4.5/5 stars!
Once again, purchasing from Canada's Motorcycle (soon to be FortNine!) was quick, easy, and my package arrived quite promptly and well packaged as per usual. As this shield does not come with a pinlock, I simply used the one that was on my existing RF-1200 clear shield.
I was curious as to whether the shield would work well enough in our climate since it usually isn't super warm here and it did mention in the product description that temperature can cause fluctuation in performance. So I actually thought it might not darken all that well in our overall everyday riding conditions here. I am happy to report that this was not the case at all - it darkens perfectly well even in the "cooler warm" temps (eg 12 degrees C) providing it is light out. I have been pleased with the transition in various conditions while wearing it as it darkens quite quickly and to a nice dark smoke. It does take a bit of additional time to fade out to clear. This is not highly problematic in most riding conditions (eg from sunny to overcast) but if you find yourself having to suddenly ride through a dark tunnel you may find that you need to flip up your visor as you may find it a bit too dark otherwise. This is not a deal breaker for me in any way but I did degrade the rating a tiny bit simply because I do find that the fade takes a bit longer than I would really like so if one is cruising along at 100 km/hr and needing to flip the visor up, the wind force is a bit daunting to the eyeballs ;). It is, to me, a worthwhile trade-off though for such a minimal inconvenience.
I have not found that the visor scratched more easily than any other visor (as I have read in some other reviews) I have had. I have washed it a good 1/2 dozen times now with a soft microfibre cloth and warm water (have not needed any soap) without issue.
I have been asked a few times how quickly it transitions from clear to dark in the "real world" so as an example, I was going to v-tape this and post it but by the time I moved the helmet on the outside deck and placed the timer in front of it and got ready to hit record, it had already darkened to a pretty dark smoke color. Plus I have not yet edited the video.....So on that note, I would say it transitions to dark pretty quickly indeed!
In giving this shield a rating of 4.4/5, it lost 1/2 point due to it definitely being on the higher price point end (especially if you need to purchase an additional pinlock for it) and also because I do find it takes a bit long to transition from dark (not a deal breaker by any means) to clear. Otherwise it has definitely been one of my gear purchases that I have been most happiest with! Love that I don't need to worry about carrying my sunglasses with me all the time and if I go contact lens free for a day and wear my glasses, it is not an issue if it's bright out.

The Best Purchase!
Worth every cent to never have to carry/think about eye wear! I was worried it was going to be too dark and not transition fast enough in and out of shadows and tunnels but it is perfect and has never been an issue--it has three different shades that it moves in and out. I will never live without one again!

Awesome Shield
I bought this shield before a 3000 km bike trip I had planned with some friends. I didn't want to bother with bringing multiple shields for the trip. This shield worked flawlessly. It darkens quite quickly once exposed to the sun and I never found it to be too dark or too light while riding. The only thing I think that Shoeii can improve on is that the shield takes longer to transition to clear that it does to darken. If you're riding in bright sunlight and have to ride through a dark tunnel, for example, you may need to lift your shield to see better, but other than that this is a fantastic product! I'm curious to see how well it will continue to work when it's a few years old, but so far it's been great.

Great product, saves on sunglasses!
Purchased this in June 2019. Great fitment, easy to change, eliminates the need for shield changes or sunglasses. I only have two cons....one is price. At the price point it is at, it is almost ridiculous. Although it is a great product, its almost half the price of the helmet. There should be a package deal available to reduce the overall cost. The second con I have, is that on dull sunless days it does not clear a thorough as I would like. I guess the answer is to only ride on bright days!
