Heavy duty.
I have had these boots for a few months now. I cannot review them as moto boots yet because I bought them at the end of riding season. I have though been wearing them constantly in an attempt to work them in so that they won’t be stiff and new in the spring. I’ve walked my dog in them daily, raked my fall leaves, done some gardening, and worn them all day at work to get them as broken in as possible. I bought them because the RedWing boots I had been riding in were taking a beating and I wanted to get dedicated riding boots that had the redwing aesthetic without paying the redwing price tag. They certainly give the look from the outer angles however look quite clunky from above. I think the prime culprit is the the zipper flap over the laces. I have never had a laces/zipper interfering with the bike issues in the past over decades of riding so this flap strikes me as unnecessary. As such, it just adds extra bulk over the laces. Not an issue if wear straight leg riding pants but I don’t. So my pant cuff are tight around the boots. I wear ugly bros and more tapered pants when riding because I’m not a fan of my cuffs flapping in the wind. Half sizes would have been a great feature as, because of the lacing system, you can’t get them super tight. So I bought a pair of 8s and 9s to compare. I could not fit into the 8s at all, and the 9s were roomy. I added an insole and keep them tightly laced and they feel fine. The zipper opening is far from convenient. If you keep the boots tied snug, getting in through the zipper opening is a struggle. And the Velcro tab meant to cover the zipper pull will surely eventually wear out over time and be a nuisance. They are working in ok and I try to condition them once a month to loosen them up.
Having said all of this, I do believe when riding season comes around again, these boots will rise to the occasion. I like the boots with the wedge sole because if I’m riding for days on end, when I get off the bike to stop for coffee or fuel or to walk around wherever I’ve landed, I want my boots to be comfortable off the bike as much as on. With some more breaking in, I think these will work. I have had this experience with redwing boots in the past, that after a sometimes painful break in period, they end up feeling like a second skin. This is what I hope to achieve with these.
