The best way to measure for a motorcycle head lift stand pin is to directly measure the steer stem diameter at the bottom where the pin will be inserted.
Woodcraft recommends to take a socket from your toolbox, and find the one that fits with the least amount of wiggle room. Take that socket and use a set of calipers to measure the outside diameter, this will give you the needed pin size.

Get the one that matches the bike
I thought I could get by with just one pin, but decided to grab one for each bike and am glad I did. Would a 16mm pin work in a 17mm bike? Sure. But the small price for the additional pin makes it far more stable.
