About Shorts
Built for riders who want climbing comfort without sacrificing control on descents. Use this guide to choose the right MTB short and liner setup so you avoid overheating, chafing, drivetrain snags, and pockets that let your phone bounce out on the first rough section. Some of our favorites include Troy Lee Designs, Fox Racing, and Endura.
1. MTB Shorts Types and When to Choose Each
| Bike Shorts type | Typical terrain and demands | What matters most |
|---|---|---|
| Liner shorts (padded) | Long pedaling days, XC and trail rides, hot weather, riders who want minimum bulk | Chamois shape and density, stable leg grippers that do not creep, breathability, seams that do not sit on pressure points |
| Shell shorts (linerless) | Trail, enduro, and park riding where you want pockets, abrasion resistance, and pad compatibility | Durable but stretchy fabric, secure waistband, pocket placement that does not bounce, inseam and leg opening that work with knee pads and do not snag drivetrains |
| Shell shorts with included inner liner | Riders who want a one purchase setup for mixed trail riding, rentals, travel, and “grab and go” days | Liner attachment that does not twist, liner quality (it is often the weak link), waist security, and whether you can replace the liner when it dies |
2. Key MTB Shorts Features and Trade-Offs
| Feature | Benefit | Downside you pay for |
|---|---|---|
| Lined (2 piece) vs linerless shell | Lined simplifies the setup, linerless lets you pick a better liner and replace it separately | Lined can fit weird and bunch, linerless costs more if you buy a good liner |
| Chamois thickness and density | Reduces pressure and vibration on long rides | Too thick increases heat and friction, can cause saddle sores faster than no pad |
| Floating liner attachment (buttons or snaps) | Helps liner move with you instead of twisting | Attach points can fail, some systems pull the liner into strange tension |
| Fabric choice (light stretch vs tougher woven) | Light stretch pedals cooler, tougher fabric survives crashes and brush | Tough fabric usually runs hotter and feels stiffer when wet |
| Waist closure (ratchet, ladder, hook and loop) | Keeps shorts from sliding down and dragging pads | Hardware can dig in while bent over, hook and loop eats other fabrics in the wash |
| Inseam length | More coverage helps with brush and light abrasion | Too long interferes with knee pads and traps heat, too short exposes thigh to pedals and trail rash |
| Venting (zip vents, laser perforations) | Big comfort gain on climbs | Vents are weak points, zips clog with mud, more seams to fail |
| Pocket placement (high thigh vs hip) | High thigh pockets bounce less and stay accessible | Any loaded pocket adds swing weight and can bruise you in a crash |
| Water resistance (DWR, coated fabric) | Better comfort in spray and light rain | It wets out eventually, and you still sweat inside if breathability is poor |
3. MTB Shorts Design Options (Shell + Liner vs Separate)
• Option A: Shell shorts with an integrated liner
• Ideal user: wants a single purchase that “just works” for moderate distances
• Strengths: simple, fewer decisions, usually comfortable out of the box
• Limitations: liner quality is often the weak link; when the liner dies, the shorts are not far behind
• Option B: Linerless shell plus a separate liner (or bib liner)
• Ideal user: rides often, prioritizes saddle comfort, and wants the best pad and the best shell independently
• Strengths: buy a liner that actually fits, replace only the sweaty part, and match pad thickness to your saddle and ride length
• Limitations: more expensive, more laundry, and more chances to choose the wrong combination
• Hybrid: Padded liner shorts only (no shell)
• Ideal user: long pedaling days with minimal snag risk, and riders who do not need pockets or extra abrasion resistance
• Strengths: coolest, least bulky, nothing flaps or catches
• Limitations: you lose pocket utility and brush protection; in a crash, you are basically wearing optimism
4. MTB Shorts Fit, Sizing, and Compatibility
• A short that shifts is a short that chafes. If the waistband migrates or the liner twists, you get hot spots and friction that can turn into saddle sores.
• Chamois placement matters more than chamois thickness. The pad needs to sit under your sit bones in your riding posture, not when you are standing in front of a mirror.
• Never wear cotton underwear under a liner. It adds seams, holds moisture, and increases friction.
• Knee pad compatibility:
• If you ride with pads, prioritize a leg opening that does not bind at the top of the pad when you bend.
• If the inseam overlaps the top of the pad and bunches, you will feel it every pedal stroke.
• Pocket reality check: put your phone where it will not bounce and where you will not land on it. High thigh is usually safer than hip.
• Heat, cold, wet:
• Hot: lighter shell, better venting, linerless plus a breathable liner.
• Cold descents: a wind blocking front panel helps more than “water resistance.”
• Wet: treat shells and liners as separate jobs. A wet liner is the part you feel most.
5. MTB Shorts Care and Maintenance
• Wash liners like performance gear, not like gym socks. Use a gentle cycle, mild detergent, and skip fabric softener (it can ruin wicking and trap stink).
• Close hook and loop before washing. Otherwise it chews up mesh panels, elastic grippers, and anything else it touches.
• If a crash tears the shell or blows out a seam, patching is fine for casual riding. If the damage changes fit or lets the liner shift, the short is done.
